A New Year

In the lab the crop year doesn’t follow the typical calendar year, in the lab the calendar year is June 1st to May 31st. The busiest time of year is over the winter. We will receive boxes upon boxes of corn, soybeans, edible beans, and other miscellaneous crops. During those months we dread seeing a UPS or FedEx truck, but at least Joyce and Lauren reach their step goals over the winter. As spring approaches, producers get busy in the fields, we get fewer samples sent in yet have some stragglers. The lab crew looks forward to the day where the counter becomes emptier by the day. Throughout the summer there will be a steady flow of grass samples sent in for a purity and/or germination test. The lab will be busy once wheat harvest starts in July, with producers sending in samples predicting the short turn around to get wheat planted; lots of germination and TZ tests. Soybeans will gradually start being sent to the lab once harvested, then the cycle will start all over.
