Seed Testing FAQ

Q: Where do we send our seed?

You can use whatever shipping service works best for you whether it is USPS, FedEx, or UPS. If you are going to use USPS our postal address is as follows: P.O. Box 21008, Lansing, MI 48909. For FedEx or UPS shipping use: 2901 Jolly Road, Okemos, MI 48864. We recommend using either FedEx or UPS.

Q: How much seed should we send in for testing?

Minimum weights needed for Official Purity, Noxious Weed Exam, and Germination:

Grass, alfalfa, red clover, or seeds of similar size: 5oz / 150G

Amount needed for Certification and additional testing:

Certification: 1.5lbs of seed

Canadian Purity: 3lbs of seed

Dry Bean Blight and/or Anthracnose Test: 5lbs of seed

Seed Count: 1lb of seed

If you request just a warm and cold germination, a quart Ziplock bag full of seed will be sufficient. If you want to make sure to send enough seed, please call the office.

Q: What apparatus can I send my seed in?

If you have our sample bags, we suggest using those. You can send in a request to receive those bags on our website. However, any Ziplock plastic bag works just fine. We just ask that you securely seal or tape the bags shut so the bags don’t burst open during shipping.

Q: How much do tests cost?

Warm germination (corn, soybeans, small grains) – $15

Warm germination (small legumes) – $17

Warm germination (vegetable) – $22

Sand germination – $25

Cold Test – $18

Saturated Cold Test – $28

Accelerated Aging Test (AA) – $18

For more pricing information, please look under the ‘Lab Testing’ tab on our website.

Q: Do I need to send payment with my seed?

No, our billing department will invoice you. Please make sure all your contact information (name, address, email, phone) is somewhere in your box or attached to your sample bags, in case we need to contact you. Once you receive your invoice, you can write a check or pay via credit card through our website.

Q: How soon can I get my test results?

Most of our tests (germination, sand germination, herbicide) will run 7 days, give or take when we receive the sample. Some tests (saturated cold, cold etc.) will take about two weeks. Once all tests are completed, we will email or mail you a PDF of your report. If you have a customer login, you can view your results in real time, online. If you would like to create an account, please click on ‘member login’ at the top of our home page and follow the steps to create an account.
