Seed Directory
The purpose of this listing is to provide crop producers, decision-makers, and the seed industry with a reference source of Certified and Quality Assured (QA) seed. This directory provides an easy reference to all Certified and QA seed produced in Michigan. Use this directory to select a variety based on performance or traits, then locate a producer near you. The acreages listed represent what has been applied for certification. Seed from these acreages will be harvested and lab tested for seed quality and purity before certification is complete. All Certified seed will have a blue Certified Seed Tag attached to the bag or a bulk certificate issued with each bulk load. Quality Assured seed will have a green QA tag attached.
Michigan Certified Seed is the progeny of Foundation Seed stocks. It has been produced in compliance with the rules and regulations established by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and carried out by the Michigan Crop Improvement Association (MCIA), the officially recognized seed certifying agency. If there are any questions pertaining to Michigan “Certified Seed,” please contact the MCIA office.
Seed Certification – Certified and QA seed has been field inspected and lab tested to ensure varietal purity, physical purity, germination, and freedom from contamination by seed-borne diseases. The blue and green tag immediately indicates that the seed has met high overall standards of quality and can be relied on for dependable performance. Professionally grown Certified and QA seed typically produce higher net returns than farmer-saved seed.

Wheeler Rye
Wheeler is a tetraploid rye variety released from the Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station. It is a later maturing than Balboa, is leafier, and produces more forage. Wheeler performs very well in other states.

Rosen Rye
Rosen was brought to MSU by a Russian student, Joseph Rosen, in 1909. By 1916, Rosen production spread across the country, but cross-pollination with other rye diminished the quality of the seed stock. In 1917, MCIA partnered with growers on South Manitou Island to isolate pure seed production. For the first time since 1950, Mammoth Distilling is growing Rosen on the island to be used as a seed stock and for single batch distilling.

Cayenne Small Red Bean
Cayenne is an upright high yielding small red bean developed by Michigan State University’s dry bean breeding program. Cayenne matures in 97 days, has excellent dry down and is suited for direct harvest. It has good white mold avoidance and is resistant to strains of bean common mosaic virus and common bacterial blight. Cayenne has excellent canning quality and retains its red color following canning.
