Wheeler is a tetraploid rye variety released from the Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station in 1971. It is a cross between Gator cereal rye from Florida and a perennial oriental rye. Wheeler is a vigorous grower - 1 to 2 weeks later than Balboa, is leafier, and has produced 14% more forage in 4 years of testing at East Lansing, and Lake City.
